Beach Ponies at Prestwick 1953

Mr. McFarlane, Stew Merrilees, Grace McFarlane and my Mum, Sadie Merrilees. The families had met outside the City Bakeries and obviously got on well with each other.
Imagine riding the ponies along the beach (sheer terror) although they were probably hand led.
Years later I remember leaving the 3Ps after watching The Lone Ranger and all I wanted to be was a cowboy with a white horse, I think I gallopped all the way home to Malcolm Street.

What a great photo and memory Stew.....you seem to have been consistently photographed with young ladies from your earliest years on earth........and I do believe this trend continues to this day. ~ (Scotbandit)

I can remember doing the same thing - after watching the LOne Ranger I would ride my horse Trigger all the way down Springfield Road at a dead gallop, pulling in the reins to cross over the road. It wis grate.

These pictures and wee stories aboot our childhood days are enough to make me greet. Smashin though.

I liked the one that told about making his wee brother into his "horse" and then denying it tae his mammy when they got hame. Gave me a laugh that one!

I lived near Newbank Swings on Glamis Road until we got a new house in Easterhouse.

Hi Linda M. You mentioned Newbank swings. I used to love going over there from where we lived in Edmiston St. There were lots of swings and a really high shute.

I spent most of the summer holidays playing in Newbank swings. Many's the time Gary Nolan and I would round up a few other weans and we would use the waxed paper bread wrapper - or maragine paper if we could get hold of it - to lubricate that old shute.

We sat on that bit of waxed paper each time we slid down the shute and by the end of the day that huge shute was practically Lethal!
But boy oh boy, how loved it! DANGER, THRILLS, EXCITEMENT. Those were the good old days.....

I remember the swing park as we local kids calledit the endless sunday games of fitba with scores that resembled basketball scores like 35 to 34 stuff like that we used to gaurd oor swings with something akin to the clan territorial disputes of long ago fending off maurauding bands of weans from the far flung reaches of the other side of springfield road and lilybank only to meet up with these same weans on monday morning at schoolwhat a time I would not change a bit of it if i could except to have stayed in touch with some of these people that's the tragedy of those times and inevitable i suppose
