DID YOU LIVE ON MALCOLM STREET?

Margaret (nee Davis) Young, sent us a short message in which she shared some of her happiest memories from childhood, and expressed a desire to see photos of Malcolm Street, where she and her two sisters lived with their parents. (See her posting for January 30th 2009.)

So volunteer admin Stewart Merrilees, from Malcolm Street, and now in Nanango, Australia, with his beloved wife Dani, searched all the computers in their household for photos Margaret might not have seen.

Did YOU live on Malcolm Street?
Can you tell us for SURE it is Malcolm Street in these photos?
Can you identify any of the people in these photos?

At the same time, why don't you send in YOUR memories of that time you got into trouble for fighting. Or the time you got busted for chewing gum in class - and sent to the Headmaster to receive Six of the Best. Perhaps you won a Prize one day that you'll never forget....send photos if you have them. We'll make sure they are Posted on the Blog here, and we can weave your memories into our growing Collection that is enjoyed by so many Newlands survivors.
Just email to: Brian.Charlton@HotMail.com this handy link should open your email program for you.

(It really would be terrific to know the names of these two well-scrubbed little people, who look like they are dressed up to go to Sunday School.)

Seeing those red sandstone buildings has me in two minds. By the way, nice blog. I think those houses might have been on the same side of the street as the Rear Entrance to Barr's Factory. There was just a small sort of half-row of them as you turned into Malcolm Street I think.

I was born on 41 Delburn St Nov 14/57 and went to Newlands School till 7years old. My parents were Mary & Alex Speirs my sister was Sandra and I am Sheila. Does anyone remember us? We live in Brampton, Ontario, Canada now.

Hi, memories, the photos are definately Malcolm Street and the building at the top right is Barr's. I lived at no 5 for 10 years, ground floor, room and kitchen, left in 1962, when I was 10, decanted to Garthamlock !!!! I remember the BBC studios, St Michaels on Springfield Road.

The top photo is me and my dad on his car in Malcolm Street. We were visiting granny McKee. The other photo is me and my sister on our way to a family wedding but I don't think it was taken in Parkhead.

My name is Joe Jordan I lived at 19 Malcolm st from 1936 when I was born, until 1948 when my family emigrated to Canada. So I lived there all through the second word war and was 12 when we left. The picture in the blog I’m sure is as suggested, Malcolm st. On the right side of the photo is the Barr’s Iron Brew factory with the big entrance gate showing just as the street turns into Delburn st (If my memory serves me right). On the back right side would be roughly #19.
In 1945 the day that victory in Europe was announced (VE Day ) all the kids in the neighbourhood including myself ripped out all of the wooden lumber in all of the closes in the street, put there to eliminate collapse during bombing raids, piled it up right in the centre of that turn in the road visible in the back of the picture. At dusk it was set on fire , boy what a blaze, everyone dancing around and singing and windows cracking and popping from the heat. A memory that will stay with me forever.
Anyone else remember being there that night?
